Gustavo Cardoso on RTP: We must be careful with the laughter that Trump provokes, because this emotion disarms rationality

The coordinator of IBERIFIER in Portugal explained that the mastery of Donald Trump, the new president of the United States, was to have reversed the burden of proof for the concept of “fake news” that he popularized. Before, it was journalism that monitored and supervised politicians. He came to propose something beyond that. Those who are monitoring journalism, according to Trump, are now the politicians. Trump’s historic statement, it should be remembered, was made in 2017, after his first victory. It was in this conference.

Gustavo Cardoso, in his weekly commentary on RTP’s Antena 3, on 26 of December, also stressed that Trump’s rise to power should serve to make us reflect on the role of laughter in this process. “Many of the things Donald Trump does are meant to make us laugh, and that disarms us,” he said. Donald Trump, like others in the same political line, tries to make us laugh so that this emotion can prevent rationality.

Gustavo Cardoso – who elected Trump as the figure of the year, but not because he considers him a good example – also believes that one of the strengths of the next US president will have been to show himself to be combative and defiant. “We value people who are fighters.” One of the national examples, he mentions during his commentary, was the politician Mário Soares.
