Gustavo Cardoso on RTP: We must be careful with the laughter that Trump provokes, because this emotion disarms rationality

The coordinator of IBERIFIER in Portugal explained that the mastery of Donald Trump, the new president of the United States, was to have reversed the burden of proof for the concept of “fake news” that he popularized. Gustavo Cardoso, in his weekly commentary on RTP’s Antena 3, on 26 of December, also stressed that Trump’s rise to power should serve to make us reflect on the role of laughter in this process. “Many of the things Donald Trump does are meant to make us laugh, and that disarms us,” he said. Donald Trump, like others in the same political line, tries to make us laugh so that this emotion can prevent rationality.

Gustavo Cardoso – who elected Trump as the figure of the year, but not because he considers him a good example – also believes that one of the strengths of the next US president will have been to show himself to be combative and defiant. “We value people who are fighters.” One of the national examples, he mentions during his commentary, was the politician Mário Soares.

Gustavo Cardoso, no seu comentário semanal na antena 3 da RTP, no dia 26 de dezembro, sublinhou ainda que esta ascensão ao poder de Trump deveria servir para refletirmos sobre o papel do riso neste processo. “Muitas das coisas que Donald Trump faz é para nos rirmos, e isso desarma-nos”, afirmou. Donald Trump, como outros na mesma linha política, tenta fazer-nos rir para com esta emoção impedir a racionalidade.


Gustavo Cardoso – que elegeu Trump como figura do ano mas não por o considerar um bom exemplo – considera ainda que um dos trunfos do próximo presidente norte-americano terá sido mostrar-se combativo, desafiante. “Apreciamos as pessoas que sejam combatentes”. Um dos exemplos nacionais, evoca durante o seu comentário, foi o político Mário Soares.
