On the public station RTP3: Populist communication is diminishing the role of the journalist

Gustavo Cardoso considers that the President of the United States is undermining the role of journalism and journalists in his strategy of communicational populism. The commentary was made on RTP’s news channel 3, on 27 February, 2025.

During his first term in office, Donald Trump indeed railed against journalists and criticized their work. However, the current situation has evolved significantly. According to Gustavo Cardoso, coordinator of IBERIFIER in Portugal, Trump has now attempted to remove journalists from the equation entirely.

Cardoso explains that previously, there were three main actors in the political communication landscape: journalists, politicians, and the public. However, Trump has now sought to undermine the role of journalists. Cardoso explains that this is one of the strategies of communicational populism. Gustavo Cardoso is professor at ISCTE – IUL is a specialist in new media.
