Researcher Miguel Crespo presented the paper “Journalists at a Crossroad: Improvisation, Adaptation and Appropriation of AI in Portuguese Newsrooms” at the annual conference of the European Media Management Association (EMMA), held on 28 May 2026 at Lappeenranta University of Technology in Lappeenranta, Finland.
The study examines the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Portuguese newsrooms and is the result of a joint research project developed by the Portuguese Journalism Training Centre (Cenjor) and the Portuguese Communication Observatory (OberCom), both members of the IBERIFIER consortium.
The research is based on an online survey distributed to practising journalists in Portugal, which gathered more than 200 valid responses. The findings show that AI has become firmly embedded in journalistic routines, with around 70% of respondents reporting that they use AI tools, and almost 30% using them on a daily basis. More than 70% also state that AI has improved productivity in newsrooms, while only 3% report a decline in performance. The most widely used platforms are ChatGPT (66%), followed by Gemini (35%), Copilot (27%) and Perplexity (22%).
The presentation formed part of the scientific programme of the European Media Management Association’s annual conference, one of the leading international forums for research in media management and communication. The event brings together researchers and industry experts from across the world to discuss the key challenges and emerging trends shaping the future of the media sector.
