Journalist Irene Larraz, a membre of the IBERIFIER team, has completed her PhD with a thesis on artificial intelligence and fact-checking

The growing use of artificial intelligence in content verification was the central focus of the research carried out by Irene Larraz as part of her doctoral studies, which she defended on 5 June at the University of Navarra.

Irene Larraz is a journalist, a professional fact-checker at Newtral, and a member of the IBERIFIER team. Her academic work examines the challenges and opportunities that AI technologies present for fact-checking journalism at a time when disinformation and artificially generated content are playing an increasingly significant role in the media ecosystem.

Following the defence of her thesis, Irene Larraz highlighted the importance of the academic experience and the time devoted to research. “I greatly value having the opportunity to dedicate time to learning. I have enjoyed researching something I am truly passionate about,” she said.

Larraz’s research also reflects the growing interest within the academic community in understanding the impact of artificial intelligence on journalistic processes and information verification mechanisms.
