IBERIFIER initiative: Media literacy training in Cape Verde promotes critical thinking

Video testimonials have been compiled from Cape Verdean journalists who took part in a pilot media literacy project held in November 2025 in Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente. One of the participating journalists, João Medina, highlights the importance of fostering critical thinking and gaining a better understanding of how online social media platforms operate.

Developed by the Media Literacy and Journalism Association (ALPMJ), in partnership with the University of Cape Verde, CENJOR and the Cape Verdean Journalists’ Association (AJOC), as part of the IBERIFIER initiative, the project equipped journalists to become trainers in areas such as disinformation, fact-checking, journalistic ethics, digital citizenship and Artificial Intelligence.

The aim is to create a sustainable media literacy ecosystem in Cape Verde, strengthening critical thinking and resilience against disinformation. The project’s organisers believe that this experience could serve as a model for other Portuguese-speaking countries.
