AI is transforming the media ecosystem.Online course explores new challenges for journalism and media literacy

How is the media ecosystem changing in the age of Artificial Intelligence? What impact are these transformations having on the way information is produced, disseminated and shared? And what new challenges do they pose today for media literacy and journalism? The Massive Open Online Course , MOOC, entitled “Media in the Age of AI: New Challenges for Media Literacy and Journalism”, is a free, online course open to everyone. Promoted by the Iberian Observatory of Digital Media, IBERIFIER, and produced by the Portuguese Journalistic Training Center (Cenjor), the course promises an academic yet accessible approach to these issues.

The course comprises 25 hours of certified training and can be completed at each participant’s own pace. The programme is organised into seven modules, includes two assessment activities, and offers a range of content to read, watch and listen to. The course will be available for one year, from 10 September 2026 to 10 September 2027. Registration can be completed via this link.

AI is helping to transform the entire information ecosystem, from journalistic research and production processes to the distribution of content across digital platforms, as well as verification mechanisms and citizens’ relationship with information itself.

In this context, AI raises questions relating to the credibility of sources, disinformation, fact-checking, algorithms, social media, and citizens’ ability to critically assess the content they encounter online.

It is precisely at this intersection — where technology, media and citizens’ use of information meet — that the course is positioned, seeking to contribute to a better understanding of the transformations currently under way.
