The Portuguese news agency, Agência Lusa, will mark its 40th anniversary with a conference entitled “Democracy and Disinformation: Challenges for the Media and Public Service in the Digital Age”, to be held on 30 September at the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) in Lisbon. Ramón Salaverría, coordinator of the IBERIFIER project, will speak as the keynote speaker at 2.40 pm.
The event, which will take place in the room named after the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, will bring together politicians, media representatives, technology companies, academics and public institutions. Its aim is to analyse and debate the challenges posed by digital transformation, with a particular focus on disinformation.
Following a welcome address by Joaquim Carreira, President of Agência Lusa, the opening session will feature António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency.
The first panel, entitled “Media and Big Tech: Impact on the News Media”, will be moderated by Pedro Sousa Carvalho, Head of News at Agência Lusa. The panellists will be Sofia Tenreiro, CEO of Siemens Portugal; José Eduardo Moniz, Director-General of TVI; Sofia Marta, Country Manager at Google Cloud; and Vânia Belo, member of the Executive Committee of OberCom.
Following a break, the conference will continue with the panel “Public Service Media in the Age of the Digital Revolution”. The session, moderated by Luísa Meireles, Director of Information at Agência Lusa, will feature Nicolau Santos, President of RTP; Felisbela Lopes, Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho; and Miguel Paisana, Research Coordinator at OberCom/IBERIFIER.
The programme includes an address by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, still subject to confirmation, and a closing contribution from António José Seguro, President of the Republic, delivered via a video message.
