IBERIFIER promotes media literacy in rural areas of Spain

On April 7th, the Amado Alonso Public Library in Lerín (Navarra, Spain) hosted a talk titled “How to Detect Disinformation” (‘Cómo detectar la desinformación’), delivered by Ramón Salaverría, Professor of Journalism at the University of Navarra and coordinator of the IBERIFIER Observatory. The session, part of the project’s media literacy activities, aimed to enhance citizens’ ability to identify and combat digital disinformation.

In the talk, which brought together around twenty attendees, Salaverría explained how fake news and misleading content proliferate through social media and other online platforms. He also provided practical tools and guidelines for assessing the veracity of information, emphasizing the importance of source verification and contextual analysis in detecting disinformation.

With nearly 1,800 residents, the town of Lerín became the latest destination in IBERIFIER’s initiative to promote media literacy, a crucial effort in a world increasingly shaped by the spread of digital content. The event was held in collaboration with the local community and addressed growing concerns about the impact of disinformation on smaller communities.

The IBERIFIER coordinator emphasized that media literacy is a fundamental tool for strengthening democracy and promoting a well-informed, critical citizenry. “It is essential that citizens, especially in smaller towns, know how to distinguish between truthful information and manipulation, as access to digital information directly influences decision-making and social well-being,” Salaverría explained.

The talk in Lerín is part of a series of activities launched by the IBERIFIER Observatory in various localities to raise awareness about disinformation and foster a more critical media culture among information consumers. By engaging experts and scholars in the field, IBERIFIER continues to consolidate its role as a key player in the fight against disinformation in the Iberian region.
