The Agência Lusa, the portugueses news agency, has created its own department for fact-checking. According to its news director, Luísa Meireles, “disinformation now goes far beyond journalism and requires more than simply presenting opposing viewpoints”.
In this way, Agência Lusa aims to strengthen public trust and contribute to the democratic debate”, explains Joaquim Carreira, Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors.
To analyze pieces that may include disinformation, que categories “True”, “False” and “True but” will be used. The new service combines journalistic principles and values using a variety of investigation tools. More information here.
The Agência Lusa is part of the IBERIFIER consortium, and this initiative strengthens the group of organizations within the consortium that already conduct fact-checking, such as Polígrafo from Portugal; Maldita.es and EFE Verifica from Spain (the latter also linked to a news agency); as well as Newtral and Verificat.
The Agência Lusa already has a section dedicated to disinformation.
